The EEA is the best
example of a large geographical region where freedom of movement
and freedom to work exists. The basic rule is that a national
of any of the 18 countries within the EEA is permitted to
work in any other EEA country without having to apply for
a work permit or visa. The 18 countries are:
| Austria |
Belgium |
Denmark |
Finland |
France |
Germany |
| Greece |
Iceland |
Ireland |
Italy |
Liechtenstein |
Luxembourg |
| Netherlands |
Norway |
Portugal |
Spain |
Sweden |
UK |
(N.B. With effect from June 2002 Switzerland is included in
the EEA for immigration purposes).
The same freedom to work extends to spouses and other family
members of EEA nationals, although in this case there are
formalities, which should be completed in the country of residence
before relocating.
The European Union is currently considering membership applications
from about 13 other countries. The membership process is long
and involved, but inclusion will eventually benefit companies
in their ability to move employees across borders.
